Free Tool to Track Facebook Shares and Likes

A few weeks ago mashable did a piece (on.mash.to/zSQmjU) on a selection of free Google doc spreadsheets that can pull in and analyze social media data. Essentially the spreadsheets can work as a poor man's alternative to expensive, professional social media monitoring tools. I recently went through these different spreadsheets and the two most valuable tools seemed to be:

  • Tool 1 for searching Twitter results
  • Tool 2 for counting Facebook likes and shares that are associated with specific urls (website addresses)

I think tool 2 would be particularly useful for small business keeping tabs on competitors. It could also be useful for identifying hot content. I had issues getting tool 3 to work. For full details on setting up these spreadsheets be sure to read the mashable article.

If you like these tools you might also like this tool for tracking Facebook fans and Twitter followers over time.

Method of Comparing and Rating Websites

Smashing Magazine recently did a nice piece on a system for rating and comparing websites. What I particularly like about this systems is that it can easily be vizualized. It also seems like a decent approach should you not want to recruit participants to properly conduct a usability test. Having said that,in my opinion, conducting a usability test with actual users is preferable. In any case, the system outline by Smashing Magazine can be accessed here bit.ly/z01dRq.
